Feld Motor Sports made two big announcements at the final round of the 2011 AMA Supercross Championship last weekend in Las Vegas. The first was the 2012 Supercross schedule, usually not released until July, and the second was the running of the Monster Energy Cup on October 15, 2011 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. From 1998 to 2009, the invite-only event was held at the MGM Grand every October.

Like the US Open, the Monster Energy Cup will post a $250,000 purse with the winner taking $100,000. However, coupled with a major format change, a bigger payment of $1,000,000 is available to any rider who can sweep the event. Dubbed The Monster Million, it's ten times the biggest cash prize in Supercross history. The event, which will air live on SPEED, will "feature an epic endurance challenge of a three-stage 30-lap main event," said Todd Jendro, senior director of two wheel operations for Feld Motor Sports. "This newly created format incorporates three main events, where riders will engage in three races, battling for the win."

The class structure is all-in, allowing the riders and manufacturers to choose any displacement of two strokes or four strokes. The track will consist of a hybrid of supercross and motocross terrain with major motocross-style influence.

"We wanted to create a spectacular standalone event that we knew would excite the fans, riders, teams and media," said Bruce Stjernstrom, Monster Energy's Vice President of Sports Marketing.

With no major changes the 2012 AMA Supercross schedule again feature 17 rounds starting at Anaheim's Angel Stadium and ending in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium. After a one-year hiatus, New Orleans returns to the schedule on April 14 at the Superdome. The Jacksonville, Florida, round has been dropped.

Tickets for the 2012 AMA Supercross season go on sale nationally May 13.
