Teton Gravity Research, the Jackson Hole-based ski and action sports film company, recently launched TGR Studios, a full service production house specializing in HD video. TGR intends to use content from the Studios to expand its web presence, adding blog posts, video clips and coverage of ongoing projects in real time.
"We really have [three] main components to our business now: merchandise, our website, and our productions," TGR cofounder Todd Jones told ESPN from Alaska. "As we put things into place to expand those different areas, we realized there was a huge opportunity with TGR Studios to provide content and production services to a large number of companies."
TGR has produced shows on Fuel TV, shot segments and provided footage for the Jeep World of Adventure Sports on NBC, and developed commercial projects including the Ford Explorer and The North Face webisodes. In the last several months, TGR has filmed projects for Apple, Billabong, GoPro cameras, and others. TGR is also in the process of pitching a 3D actions sports TV series and a reality series.
"We have been deeply embedded in digital distribution and the online space for a long time now," Jones said. "We are now seeing tons of companies ... that have a need for newer types of content to fill the new distribution space in the online world."
It's also a chance, Jones added, for TGR to use its camera technology to increase competition among larger production companies. "This space is nothing new for us, but we saw an opportunity to take what we have been doing and expand on it. [We] can now compete on a level with the big LA production houses."
Jones said the Studios branch was formally created about eight months ago. TGR hired Jon Klaczkiewicz as its head of productions in September. Klaczkiewicz worked with TGR early in his career, but most recently supervised elements for "Deeper," the company's first exclusively snowboarding film that released in 2010. Klaczkiewicz's goal "was to formally launch TGR Studios and put the infrastructure in place to grow it," Jones explained.
TGR Studios has two feature films currently in development: "Further," which is the second installment of Jeremy Jones' snowboard trilogy, and its fall 2011 ski film called "One for the Road."
