Ski resorts reopening for July 4

Snowbird, Utah, which has received a record-breaking 760 inches of snow this year, recently announced that the ski area would extend winter operations on weekends (Friday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., MT) through July 4. This marks the third time in the resort's 40-year history that they've stayed open till July. The closing date will bring Snowbird's opening days for the 2010-11 winter to 202 days, which beats the 2005 record of 201 ski days.
"Most people who have seen how much snow is still up here know this was an easy call, but it's still very exciting for our guests who started skiing in November and will still be on the slopes in July," said Dave Fields, Snowbird's Vice President of Resort Operations.
In California, Mammoth, Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl and Alpine Meadows will all remain open or reopen on July 4 weekend. Sugar Bowl will be spinning Disney Chair and Squaw plans to operate five chairlifts -- the Funitel, Gold Coast, Shirley Lake, Links and the Cable Car -- on Saturday, July 2 through Monday, July 4.
"It is certainly uncommon to be able ski in July but it is truly unheard of to be operating at the capacity that we will be operating on July 4 weekend," said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley's Chief Executive Officer.
Colorado's Arapahoe Basin is open seven days a week through June 5, then will be open weekends through June 19. Oregon's Timberline summer ski and snowboard season started May 31 and runs through Sept. 5.
