Car crashes have taken a big toll on DeAndre Hopkins’ family.

But when he crashed a blue 1995 Chevy Impala 16 months ago and walked away with only a concussion, perhaps Hopkins broke a spell.

"I think we're free," Sabrina Greenlee, Hopkins' mother, told Tania Ganguli of the Houston Chronicle. "I'm claiming that we're free. We are free of that. Took a lot of years."

The Texans are counting on big things from Hopkins, the 27th overall pick in this year's NFL draft, in his rookie season. He should be the starting receiver opposite Andre Johnson.

Growing up without the dad who was killed in a car wreck when he was just five months old taught him a toughness that may help him in his football career.

Said Hopkins: "Nothing's too big to overcome. … That's just how we are."
