Getting Alex Smith may require trade

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting it is highly unlikely the San Francisco 49ers will release quarterback Alex Smith. Thus, if the Kansas City Chiefs want him, they will likely have to trade for him.

I’d think Smith would likely command a mid-round pick with perhaps some conditions written in based on performance. Smith will probably be among the top quarterbacks Kansas City discusses acquiring.

In other AFC West news:
  • Here is a tentative round-by-round draft selection list. It will change when the compensatory picks are awarded next month.
  • Denver coach John Fox said backup running back Knowshon Moreno did have surgery on his knee, which was injured in the playoff loss to Baltimore. Initially, Denver thought the injury would not require surgery. Moreno is expected to be fine by training camp.
