LSU outlasted TCU 37-27 at AT&T Stadium Saturday in a clash of SEC and Big 12 contenders:
It was over when: Quarterback Zach Mettenberger found Jarvis Landry, who sliced through TCU’s defense for a 20-yard touchdown that put LSU ahead 37-27 with just over six minutes to play. Odell Beckham Jr. set up the scoring drive with a 75-yard kickoff return.
Game ball goes to: Beckham, who had a big night receiving, too, with five catches for 118 yards. He set up another one of LSU’s touchdown drives in the second quarter, hauling in catches of 26 and 44 yards on back-to-back plays to put the Tigers at the TCU 7-yard line.
Stat of the game: The Tigers were able to keep TCU’s defense on the field and wear it down late thanks to third-down proficiency. LSU converted 13 of its 19 third-down opportunities. As a result, the Tigers got off 80 snaps -- 26 more than TCU did.
What it means: LSU will head into SEC play with a marquee nonconference win on its résumé.
What it means for TCU: The Horned Frogs will have to figure out what they want to do at quarterback before delving into Big 12 play. Casey Pachall got the start, but Trevone Boykin got the Frogs back into the game in the second half.
