FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Greetings from the soggy Fort, where Friday is a day for orations, introductions and the first day the Red Sox are fully revealed as the Sons of John Farrell, though rain may interfere with the club’s plans to conduct their first full-squad workouts.

Rain kept activities inside on Thursday -- 1.76 inches fell, according to the Fort Myers News-Press weather almanac, though it felt like it was a lot more -- and there is a 70 percent chance of more rain today, according to the forecast.

That cuts a day off Farrell’s hopes to have Shane Victorino and Jacoby Ellsbury learn each other’s moves in the outfield as much as possible before Victorino departs for the World Baseball Classic. Victorino is scheduled to report to Team USA’s camp on March 1.

The clubhouse will be open to the media for about an half hour before the usual first-day activities begin. The Sox owners typically introduce themselves, the rest of the staff says hey, and then Farrell takes the floor with the speech that is supposed to set the tone for the season. Last spring, in the wake of the previous September’s collapse, David Ortiz also addressed the team.
