Player of the Night - Matthew Dellavedova, Saint Mary’s Gaels
For the second game in a row, Dellavedova posted some eye-popping numbers. He finished with 31 points, eight assists and six rebounds in the Gaels’ 120-67 win over Jackson State.
It’s his second straight 30-7-5 game. There have only been two other such games in Division I this season. Over the past 10 years, the only other players with back-to-back 30-7-5 games were Reggie Hamilton, Stephen Curry and Rodney Stuckey.
It’s the most rebounds off the bench by a Big Ten player since Iowa’s Ryan Bowen had 18 in 1996. It’s the most rebounds in 21 minutes or fewer since Texas’ James Thomas had 19 in 21 minutes against Brown in 2003.
A big key was the play of Binney and Jones off the bench. The duo combined to shoot 11-for-11 from two-point range. Binney had a career-high 10 points, while Jones scored 12 of Duquesne’s final 19 points.
Freshman of the Night – Siyani Chambers, Harvard Crimson
Chambers matched his career-high with 21 points, including the game-winner with 4 seconds to go against Boston University. The Crimson have now won 13 straight games against schools from Boston, a streak that dates back to 2008.
Stat Sheet Stuffer – Elfrid Payton, Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns
Payton had 17 points to go with 11 rebounds, three assists and five steals as the Ragin’ Cajuns beat Lamar 77-60. Through 10 games, Payton is averaging 13.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.9 steals.
Over the past 15 seasons, the only player to sustain those averages for a full season was Weber State’s Eddie Gill in the 1999-2000 season.
