Everybody's fighting to scramble over one another in the recruiting game, especially with just a few days remaining in the 2013 recruiting season.
It's tough to make huge moves, but colleague Travis Haney looked at a few programs moving up, holding steady and falling in regards to recruiting.
The first team on his list of teams slipping up in recruiting? Oklahoma. The Sooners' classes have averaged inside the top 10 in the past five seasons, but this year's class ranks just 20th. That top-10 ranking came on the strength of a few years ago, too. The Sooners haven't finished in the top 10 since 2010, and Haney points to the growth of programs like Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Baylor that are providing a lot more competition for the Sooners these days than just Texas.
That's not a good sign for the Sooners, who I've noted on multiple occasions since the end of the season will be facing a bit of a talent drop-off from last year's team. Thinking back on how good that 2008 team was, there were arguably 5-10 players on that team better than any who will suit up for the 2013 Sooners. When it comes to that kind of gap, you have to look at the recruiting efforts. That 2010 class with Kenny Stills, Tony Jefferson, Corey Nelson, Trey Millard, and Aaron Colvin was loaded with future talents, but the Sooners haven't landed a class with those kinds of impact players since.
Can that change this year? It's a little silly to rank recruiting classes at all until players show how they'll make the transition from high school to college, which is always hard to project.
Still, I'd agree that Oklahoma's recruiting efforts have clearly taken a dip, and if the Sooners are going to get back in the national title picture soon, they'll have to rebound from this latest slide.
