IRVING, Texas -- It's like the big elephant in the room. But several Cowboys players are not hiding from the issue that alcohol played a role in the death of practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown.
Brown's teammate, nose tackle Josh Brent, was charged with intoxication manslaughter on Saturday after he crashed his car.
Brent has a history of alcohol related problems. In his sophomore year at Illinois, he was arrested for driving under the influence and suspended from the team. He later returned for his junior season.
"I'm sure guys learned from it," defensive end Jason Hatcher said regarding drinking and driving. "At the end of the day, God has a plan, it could have been any of us, I'm not a saint. I've done some the things that he did, but at the end of the day, God had a plan on his life, it was supposed to happen, so we can't look at like, 'oh he's a bad guy,' because he's not. That's God's plan on his life you got to realize God's plan."
The club where Brent and Brown attended that Friday night, Privae Dallas, is talking with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and police about its actions that night according to the Associated Press.
There were numerous twitter messages that claimed several Cowboys players had also attended the club the same night as Brent and Brown.
"I don't know," fullback Lawrence Vickers said when asked about who was at the club.
The Cowboys have been very positive regarding Brent, with coach Jason Garrett telling him in a Monday meeting before the memorial service, the team loved him. Brown's mother, Stacey Jackson, sat with him, at her request at the memorial service.
And while the Cowboys are not condoning what Brent is being charged with, they are still supporting him and becoming aware of the issues.
"You’re supposed to learn something from a tragic situation," Vickers said. "You’re supposed to take everything you can from it and one of the things, like I said Jerry’s mom talking, is learn from the situation. Don’t be blinded to the situation. Make sure we take care of each other and one of her main things is make sure we take care of Josh, so that’s what we’re going to do."
