OXNARD, Calif. -- Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher and receiver Miles Austin are not practicing Friday.

The good news: They aren't injured. They've been given a "veteran's day." This is preventative maintenance.

The Cowboys are going to carefully manage the 29-year-old Austin's workload all season. They intend to go to great lengths to keep him healthy after he's been plagued with hamstring problems the last two seasons.

Hatcher, 31, who is making the transition from 3-4 defensive end to 4-3 defensive tackle, mentioned Wednesday that his groin and hamstring felt like they were "on fire."
