DALLAS -- Point guard Jose Calderon probably won't play in the Dallas Mavericks' preseason opener Monday night against the New Orleans Pelicans, coach Rick Carlisle said.

(UPDATE: Carlisle confirmed after the morning shootaround that Calderon would not play.)

Calderon has been nursing a strained hamstring since Wednesday. He participated in about half of the Mavs' Sunday practice, his first full-speed work since tweaking his hamstring.

The Mavs are exercising caution with the 32-year-old Calderon, who played for Spain in Eurobasket just before reporting to training camp. They'd prefer for their new starting point guard to get significant work in the preseason, but the priority is to make sure he's completely healthy for the Oct. 30 regular-season opener.

"We need to get him involved, but not at any risk level," Carlisle said. "He's going to be fine. He knows what we're doing."

Rookie Gal Mekel will get the start at point guard in the preseason opener if Calderon sits. First-round pick Shane Larkin (ankle) and free-agent addition Devin Harris (toe) are continuing to recover from offseason surgeries and have yet to be cleared to practice.
