Robbie Ross to go on DL (forearm strain)

The Texas Rangers will place left-handed pitcher Robbie Ross on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left forearm strain.

The move is retroactive to Thursday and means Ross is eligible to return Sept. 14. The rookie has been a big contributor to the bullpen in his first big league season. He is 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA in 52 relief appearances for the Rangers in 2012. He had the fourth-lowest ERA among AL relievers and ranked sixth in innings pitched before Friday's game. He led all AL relievers in inducing ground ball double plays (11).

At the very least, it gives Ross a mandatory break. Assuming all goes well, he can return and be ready for the end of the season and the playoffs. Ross has logged a lot of innings in his first year and we've seen from the past few years what can happen to some pitchers (see Alexi Ogando) when the innings rack up. So perhaps this may help Ross down the line, assuming he progresses just fine in the coming weeks.
