Impact of three-way deal on Rangers
Arizona gets: SS Didi Gregorius, LHP Tony Sipp, 1B Lars Anderson
Cleveland gets: OF Drew Stubbs, RHP Trevor Bauer, RHP Matt Alberts, RHP Bryan Shaw
Cincinnati gets: OF Shin-Soo Choo, INF Jason Donald
The Diamondbacks have wanted a young, shortstop under team control all offseason and they land it in this deal. One of the big buzz items at the Winter Meetings was the fact that the Rangers were trying to acquire a shortstop they could ship to Arizona to get Justin Upton. That's why there was talk of three-team and four-team deals.
Now, though, Arizona has its shortstop and GM Kevin Towers told reporters it's "highly unlikely" the D-backs will trade Upton. Of course, that doesn't mean they wouldn't trade him for the right package, but now they don't have to do anything.
So far this offseason, the Rangers lost out on Zack Greinke (he chose the Dodgers), James Shields (it would have taken Jurickson Profar and I don't blame them for not doing that) and now, it appears, Justin Upton.
What does that mean for Josh Hamilton? It would appear to give the slugger a little more leverage with Texas in that they haven't replaced that big bat in the middle of the lineup. But I don't think Texas will do anything they aren't comfortable with in terms of how the contract is structured. But he's still on the market and the Rangers could sure use him. This front office, though, won't be pressured into doing something they don't feel is in the best short-term and long-term interest of the club. And, of course, it's only Dec. 12.
For those that were uncertain about whether to bring Hamilton back, has the past week changed your mind at all?
