A little AL West news for you on this Wednesday afternoon. The Los Angeles Angels, in need of some pitching help, traded for Jason Vargas. They dealt Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners in making the deal with an AL West rival.

I think this deal makes sense for both teams. The Mariners need some offense and Morales can give them some at an affordable price tag of somewhere around $5 million before he enters free agency. He hit .273 last season with 22 homers. For the Angels, they needed a pitcher who could give them some innings. Vargas, 29, has thrown at least 192 innings in each of the past three seasons. He had a team-high 14 wins for Seattle in 2012 and a 3.85 ERA in 217 1/3 innings. He's had a 4.09 ERA the last four years.

The Angels made big waves this offseason in signing Josh Hamilton to go along with a potent lineup that includes Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. But the rotation needed some work after Dan Haren and Ervin Santana left the club (Haren signed with the Nationals, Santana was traded to the Royals). Vargas slots into a rotation with Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Tommy Hanson and Joe Blanton. Garrett Richards could also be in the mix.

Vargas is headed to arbitration for the third time this offseason. MLBTradeRumors.com projects he'll make $7.44 million in 2013.
