Nelson Cruz's law firm issues denial

January, 31, 2013
Former MLB general manager and ESPN Insider Jim Bowden offers insight into the Nelson Cruz PED allegations and discusses possible Rangers moves with Ben and Skin.

While Nelson Cruz has yet to discuss the Miami New Times report that links his name to an anti-aging clinic that sold performance-enhancing drugs, his law firm, Farrell & Reisinger, issued a denial this week to the Associated Press.

"We are aware of certain allegations and inferences. To the extent these allegations and inferences refer to Nelson, they are denied."

We'll see what Cruz has to say on the matter eventually, but perhaps that won't happen until he arrives in Surprise, Ariz., in a few weeks for spring training.

It won't be the first time a Ranger player has held an early spring news conference after some late offseason news. Josh Hamilton held a news conference in the large tent just outside the club's offices in Surprise last year a few weeks after he had an alcohol relapse. (Yu Darvish also had a few of them in there as he worked out for the first time as a Ranger). Two years ago, it was Michael Young who made the journey to Surprise after requesting a trade after an offseason in which he felt like he couldn't trust the front office. He spoke to reporters the first day he arrived.

This year, that's likely to be Cruz's role. And if the law firm's statement is any indication, he plans on fighting this. He joins Gio Gonzalez, who came out himself with a denial earlier in the week. I'm interested to hear what Cruz has to say.

What happens as a result of all of this won't be known until MLB completes its investigation, and the league won't be handing out any punishment, if necessary, until they do that. So stay tuned.
