Injuries: Kyle McClellan upbeat after return to action
With the exception of one meaningless walk, McClellan was perfect during his two scoreless innings. He showed no rust during his return from midseason shoulder surgery and showed no signs of pitching in a game for the first time since last May.
"It was just a big relief for me to get the first one out (of the way)," McClellan said. "You envision that first one going smoothly but you're not really sure. There's always in the back of your mind, 'Am I going to get back to where I was?' And I felt I was right where I left off."
McClellan missed nearly three weeks of 2013 Cactus League action as he recovered from a sore shoulder, which was a byproduct of the surgery he had last July while still with the St. Louis Cardinals.
His first outing served as an indicator of whether he would be stretched out and remain a candidate in the competition for the open fifth starter spot in the rotation. He worked fast and had all his pitches working, especially his sinker, as none of the six out recorded left the infield (three ground balls, three popups). After reporting no lingering discomfort and an effective debut, he figures to remain in the mix for the starting gig.
"I was just concerned about his stamina," manager Ron Washington said. "I'm most certain that whatever amount of pitches he threw, we're going to add to it."
