Elvis Andrus: Staying with Rangers 'awesome'
|Ian Fitzsimmons and Richard Durrett discuss Elvis Andrus' contract extension with the Rangers and the options the club has with Ian Kinsler and Jurickson Profar.
When asked about being with the Rangers through 2018 -- Andrus reportedly has an opt out after six years -- he said, "That would be awesome."
"As a player that's what you're looking for as soon as you get here," Andrus said. "You get a chance to stay longer with a team that you like and you love. It's always a lot of good things going through your mind."
Rangers manager Ron Washington was also asked Andrus being with the club long term, and while he said "no comment" to questions about the new deal, he did speak bluntly about Andrus' chances to be a premier shortstop for a long time.
"He's a pretty good shortstop," Washington said. "There's no doubt about it."
It was assumed that Andrus would try free agency when his current contract ends in 2014 because of who his agent is, but he said that obviously wasn't the case. Andrus said his agent, Scott Boras, knows he wants to stay with the Rangers.
"Everybody knew that I loved this team," Andrus said. "That I'm really happy. Like I always said, they were the first team to give me an opportunity to make the big leagues. It never came out of my mouth that I was trying to go to free agency. I still have two more years down my belt. I never said. There were more rumors than what I actually say."
Andrus was asked what he is doing on the team's off day Thursday with an announcement of his new deal expected when the Rangers return home for their season opener Friday against the Angels.
"Take them shopping," said outfielder David Murphy in the background.
Andrus laughed out loud.
