Rangers trade for catcher Chirinos
|Tim MacMahon and Richard Durrett discuss the way Josh Hamilton was welcomed back to Texas this weekend. Did Hamilton deserve the reception he got?
It's the first trade between the Rangers and the Rays, who are in town to start a three-game series Monday night.
Chirinos has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. The 28-year Venezuelan didn't play in 2012 after suffering a concussion in spring training when a foul tip hit his mask. He played in six games for Magallanes in the Venezuelan Winter League and was 2-for-9 for the Rays this spring. Chirinos split his time in 2011 between Durham (AAA) and Tampa Bay, batting .218 (12-55) with one home run and seven RBIs in his only major league action. He was part of the Rays' trade with the Chicago Cubs in 2011 that sent pitcher Matt Garza to the Cubs.
The Rangers designated left-hander Jeff Beliveau for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Chirinos.
