Rangers want Martin Perez in starter's role

5/8/2013

Martin Perez made his first rehab start Monday night for Double-A Frisco, tossing four innings of one-run, five-hit ball. He’s expected to throw another five innings for Frisco on Saturday.

“We have 30 days to do something,” Daniels said of deciding the next step once Perez is ready to be activated. “The biggest thing is how he’s doing and how the big league level’s doing. Then there’s some administrative things to consider. If he’s optioned then he’s gotta spend 10 days down. You can’t recall him for 10 days, outside of a DL placement.

“We’ll get at least one more start on rehab and then we’ll make a call from there. At that point our choice will be to leave him on rehab, recall him to the big leagues if we have a need and he’s pitching well enough for that, or option him to the minor leagues.”

Daniels said that while the Rangers haven’t ruled anything out, he’d lean toward keeping Perez as a starter since the Rangers already have three lefties in the bullpen and that at this point in the season, he prefers to have starting pitching depth.
