Rapid Reaction: Brewers 6, Rangers 3
MILWAUKEE -- The Texas Rangers quickly fell behind 5-0 and couldn't muster up enough offense to come back in a 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
Early hole: The Rangers found themselves trying to climb out of a big early hole after the Brewers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first. Justin Grimm started the game by giving up three straight singles, the last of which drove in one run off the bat of Ryan Braun. After retiring the next two batters, Grimm failed to limit the damage. Carlos Gomez cleared the bases with a two-run double and Yuniesky Betancourt followed with a two-run homer to cap the scoring in a rough 28-pitch opening inning for Grimm. However, Grimm bounced back and lasted five innings, giving up only the five runs he allowed in the first, with eight hits and three walks while striking out seven to keep his team in the game.
Sloppy D: The tough first wasn't all on Grimm, as his defense failed to make any plays to bail him out. Nelson Cruz got a bad jump and let Braun's single barely get over his outreached glove. David Murphy seemed to take an odd route and, at the very least, should have been able to stop Gomez's double from getting past him and rolling to the warning track. That might have been the most costly mistake of the inning as it allowed two runs to score and preceded Betancourt's home run.
Moreland stays hot: Mitch Moreland homered and singled on a 2-for-4 night. That upped his line to .421/.450/.737 with two homers in his past five games.
Up next: The Rangers wrap up their two-game set against the Brewers Wednesday night with Derek Holland (2-2, 2.74 ERA) taking on veteran Kyle Lohse (1-3, 3.16 ERA). First pitch at Miller Park is at 7:10 p.m. CT.
