Should the Rangers trade Joe Nathan?

PODCAST
Rangers GM Jon Daniels joins Fitzimmons and Durrett to discuss the Matt Garza trade and if the Rangers are done shopping before the deadline.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal had a late-breaking story Saturday night that reported, according to major league sources, the Rangers have had internal discussions about dealing their 38-year-old closer.

It's a fascinating idea. The Rangers have bullpen depth. They have a former closer in Joakim Soria. They have Neftali Feliz set to arrive -- they hope -- in late August. They're not going from buyers to sellers by dealing Nathan, who has a $9 million club option that can be voided by the closer if he finishes 55 games. He entered Sunday at 39 games.

And don't be alarmed by this story coming out. Any organization worth its salt should be having internal discussions about every player on the roster that's not named Matt Harvey or Yasiel Puig or any other young superstar player.

Just because the Rangers are having "internal discussions" about Nathan doesn't mean they're close to making a deal.

Losing Nathan would have an impact on the clubhouse. He's a respected player. He's one of the best closers in the game -- still.

But the Rangers' need for offense grows more by the day. General manager Jon Daniels has to do everything he can to fix this now. Not only do they need a major league hitter -- say Los Angeles' Carl Crawford -- but a young hitting prospect needs to be added to this deal.

The Rangers in no way should wave the white flag for 2013, as bad as the first 10 games after the All-Star Game have been. But they should also look forward to 2014 and the need to rebuild the worst Rangers offense in more than a decade.
