But Maidana bounced back very nicely on Sept. 15, on the Canelo Alvarez-Josesito Lopez undercard on Showtime.
Maidana (32-3, 29 KOs), 29, knocked out Jesus Soto Karass in the eighth round of an exciting fight. Maidana, one of boxing's fiercest punchers, has designs on a bigger fight in 2013 but will stay busy hoping to get a title shot.
Maidana will fight in his home country against Angel Martinez (13-3-1, 9 KOs), a 21-year-old from Mexico, on Dec. 12 at famed Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
While he isn't facing a top opponent in Martinez (0-3-1 in his previous three bouts), Maidana's manager Sebastian Contursi is right when he said the fight isn't supposed to be a major fight and that Martinez at least put up "decent fights" against Lucas Matthysse (KO6) and Jimrex Jaca (KO8) in his two bouts in 2012.
The whole idea is for Maidana to stay sharp because he "wants to have shots at [interim titlist Robert] Guerrero and [titleholder Paulie] Malignaggi early next year," Contursi said.
