Two weeks ago, Golden Boy Promotions and Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced a deal under which Golden Boy would bring at least four boxing events per year -- for an undisclosed number of years -- to the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla.
On Saturday, Golden Boy announced the first card at the home of the NHL's Florida Panthers. In the main event of the Jan. 12 card, which will air on Fox Deportes and Fox Sports Net under Golden Boy's deal with Fox, former interim junior welterweight titlist Johan Perez of Venezuela will face long-faded former junior lightweight titlist Steve Forbes.
Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield will be a special guest at the show, each of which will have an appearance by a "boxing legend."
Golden Boy also announced additional dates for the cards it will promote at the building: June 1, Oct. 5, and Jan. 14, 2014.
"We are really excited about this new series in South Florida, and for the first event we wanted to bring a world-class fight and that is exactly what you have in Perez versus Forbes," Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya said. “Fight fans will get to see two former world champions in a battle for what could lead to a world title shot later in 2013. That usually means fireworks in the ring, and I can't wait to see it."
Perez (15-1-1, 12 KOs) lost his interim belt to Pablo Cesar Cano in July, but he is an exciting fighter.
De La Hoya's comment about Forbes (35-11, 11 KOs) possibly landing a title shot is probably an exaggeration. He is well past his prime and has lost three fights in a row, four of his past five and eight of his past 11.
