LOS ANGELES -- Whenever Steve Nash returns to game action for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, there will be a statistical milestone waiting for him to reach.

Nash, who ranks fourth on the NBA's all-time assists list with 10,278, is just 57 away from passing Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson for the No. 3 spot, behind only John Stockton and Jason Kidd.

"I have no MVP awards," Jackson said with a laugh before the Lakers played the Warriors when asked to compare his career to Nash's.

Jackson played 17 seasons with New York, the Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana, Denver, Toronto and Houston, retiring at age 39 with a career average of 8.0 assists per game. Nash, who turns 40 in February, is in his 18th season with a career average of 8.5 assists per game.

"He’s an all-time great and he’s a guy that did it the right way," Jackson said. "A true professional, a class act. Hopefully he comes back quickly and healthy, but he’s a guy that I have a tremendous amount of respect for. And I always tell my kids or anybody that asks [if] I get concerned when guys that I think can’t play are about to pass me on the assists list. That has not happened yet. It’s been guys that I consider all-time greats and it’s an honor for me to be in any category with those guys."

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said he hopes Nash will be able to return to practice sometime during the week of Dec. 1 when the Lakers have four straight days on the schedule without a game.
