Happy draft day! It's finally here.
The Giants will pick later tonight at 19th overall and the mantra is best player available. But there are so many ways the Giants can go, so many areas of need Jerry Reese can address.
Let's take a look at five things to watch for tonight:
The man they want: The Giants would love to see Alabama's monstrous tackle D.J. Fluker at 19.
Fluker describes himself as a "general" who will bring leadership and high energy to any team's offensive line. The Giants can use some of that for the future. Fluker would be terrific value at 19 if he's there. Problem is, many expect he will not be there when Reese is on the clock.
Vaccaro says he is the most complete safety in the draft. He might not be there at 19, but Reid very well could be.
The Giants like Reid and they like their LSU guys. They've drafted two in the last three years.
Irish target: The Giants typically don't value tight end as much as positions like defensive end or secondary when it comes to first-round value. But Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert is a consideration at 19 if Fluker and some of the Giants' other targets are not available.
The Giants have had a revolving door at tight end with Brandon Myers set to become the fourth starting tight end in as many years. Myers certainly is capable of posting numbers in the passing game. But Eifert might be too much to pass up on if he's there and other guys the Giants wanted are gone.
To Te'o or not: As for the other, more popular Irish prospect in the draft, a source said it is highly unlikely the Giants would take Manti Te'o in the first round.
The Notre Dame linebacker could be available at 19 and the Giants can use a linebacker. If Te'o were to fall to the second round, he could potentially be in the discussion for the Giants then.
Looking at 2014: Whomever the Giants pick at 19 tonight, Reese should come away with a guy whose biggest impact may come in 2014. The Giants have two dozen starters/contributors with contracts set to expire after this season. Reese will need to use the high part of this draft to stock his roster with some prospects who could start in 2014.
