The Jets, taking care of some backburner business Saturday, re-signed LB Josh Mauga to a one-year contract, according to his agent, Michael Hoffman.
Mauga was a restricted free agent. Instead of making the low tender offer ($1.32 million), which would've entitled them to the right of first refusal but no draft-pick compensation, the Jets were able to sign him for less than the tender amount, probably the $630,000 minimum. It made sense for both sides. Mauga didn't have any leverage after missing the final 11 games with a torn pectoral muscle, but he preferred to remain with the Jets instead of trying free agency.
The Jets could try the same thing with long snapper Tanner Purdum, another restricted free agent. TE Jeff Cumberland received the $1.32 million tender.
