Rapid Reaction: Mets sign Grandy

What it means: The Mets' outfield essentially is set for 2014 with the signing of Chris Young to a one-year, $7.25 million contract and the agreement with Curtis Granderson on a four-year, $60 million deal pending a physical.

Most likely, assuming Juan Lagares hits enough to justify an everyday role, he will man center field, with Granderson in left field and Young in right field. That pushes Eric Young Jr. to a fourth outfielder role or to second base if the Mets use Daniel Murphy to address another need.

The batting order: Who is the leadoff hitter? Well, if Eric Young is not the starter, that's a little nebulous. But given that manager Terry Collins likes to alternate lefties and righties, you could be looking at a Nos. 2 through 7, barring more changes, of Murphy, Wright, Granderson, Chris Young, Lucas Duda and Travis d'Arnaud. Heck, maybe Murphy slides up to the leadoff spot. Or maybe the Mets can acquire a shortstop who bats leadoff.

What's next: The Mets still have plenty of heavy lifting to do this winter. On the position-player side, they will look to trade Ike Davis or Duda -- probably Davis. And they will try to upgrade at shortstop, although the trade route appears the only option, so Ruben Tejada may end up the Opening Day starter after all.

Pitching-wise, ideally the Mets would add two external starting pitchers to pair with Jonathon Niese, Zack Wheeler and Dillon Gee. Otherwise, they will have to lean on someone from the system, which could include Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero, which is not the preference for April.
