The mock-draft dilemma with the New York Giants is consistent. Their greatest needs are at offensive line and linebacker, but they haven't taken an offensive lineman in the first round since 1999 and they haven't taken a linebacker in the first round since 1984. They tend to take defensive backs in the first round, and they could have some options there at No. 19 overall, but if not, there's always the Big Blue bread-and-butter -- the defensive line.
Ohm takes up this topic in his most recent draft preview piece on ESPNNewYork.com. With Osi Umenyiora gone and Justin Tuck aging, Ohm rates the need for "a pass-rusher for the future" as a 9 on a scale of 1-10:
After BYU’s Ezekiel Ansah and LSU’s Barkevious Mingo –- both expected to be gone by when the Giants pick at 19 –- Florida State’s Bjoern Werner is widely considered the next best defensive end. Werner, who had 13.0 sacks last year, is the only other first-round caliber defensive end on Scouts Inc’s draft board.
UCLA’s Datone Jones, Florida State’s Cornellius “Tank” Carradine, SMU’s Margus Hunt, LSU’s Sam Montgomery and Texas A&M’s Damontre Moore are all defensive ends who could go late in the first round or after.
Reese might have to go with a defensive end at some point with his first two picks given the depth of quality pass rushers.
“There are some pass rushers in the draft, yeah,” Jerry Reese said. “How deep it is, I’m not sure.”
There's also the possibility of a defensive tackle at this spot, and as Ohm points out there might be too much value for the Giants to pass up if highly regarded players such as Sheldon Richardson or Sylvester Williams falls to 19.
We're doing our blogger mock draft on Tuesday at noon ET, so you can see who I pick for the Giants in the first round. But they're a tough team to figure because their glaring needs don't match up with their history.
