ESPN.com's ranking of the top 20 NFL coaches didn't turn out to be a battle between Vince Lombardi and George Halas, after all.

The cross-platform 22-person committee placed Halas No. 4 overall, meaning it deemed Lombardi and two other yet-to-be-named coaches to be better coaches. Halas was one of the NFL's founders and is credited with numerous schematic innovations, and oh yeah, he also won 324 games and six NFL championships. (His win total stood atop the league records until Don Shula exceeded it in 1993.)

Judging history is a subjective matter. I wasn't a part of this voting committee, so it's not for me to explain its rationale. All I can tell you is that it judged only three other coaches in NFL history to be better than George Halas.

Earlier: Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame coach Bud Grant checked in at No. 15 on this list. Curly Lambeau of the Green Bay Packers checked in at No. 10.
