The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have talked about adding competition for quarterback Josh Freeman. At least in the short term, they’ve subtracted a quarterback from their roster.

The Bucs released backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky on Thursday.

There’s no backup in place for Freeman at the moment. That tells me the Bucs must already have a plan in mind. There was no financial need to cut Orlovsky right now because they have plenty of salary-cap room.

The Bucs either have their eye on some other veteran or they plan on drafting a quarterback fairly early. Orlovsky never was going to be more than a backup, but you don’t release him unless you’re sure you can get someone better.

The team also released running back D.J. Ware, who became expendable after the signing of Brian Leonard.
