Today in NFC South history

Precisely one year ago today, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made one of the nicest gestures in NFL history.

They signed Eric LeGrand as an undrafted free agent, even though there was no chance LeGrand would play in the NFL. The move was more about loyalty and proof that there’s a softer side to Greg Schiano, who is often portrayed as a hard-edged coach.

Schiano was coaching at Rutgers when LeGrand was partially paralyzed during a game. Schiano remained close to LeGrand in the aftermath. That closeness didn’t stop when Schiano left Rutgers for Tampa Bay.

The Bucs signed LeGrand and did it up right by having a news conference. LeGrand has made several visits to Tampa and remains a part of the Buccaneer family, even though he had to "retire" when the Bucs had to trim their roster last preseason.
