UNC as an ACC No. 3 seed

This week marks the ninth time North Carolina -- which will play either Clemson or Florida State in Friday’s quarterfinal round -- enters the ACC tournament as the third seed. The Tar Heels have had varying success in that slot, going 11-7 (and winning the event once, in 1997).

A breakdown:

1958 – lost to Maryland in the ACC tourney finals
  • did not make NCAA tournament
1963 – lost to Wake Forest in the semifinals
  • did not make NCAA tournament
1974 – lost to Maryland in the semifinals
  • did not make NCAA tournament
1986 – lost to Maryland in the quarterfinals
  • earned No. 3 seed in NCAA tournament; lost in West region semifinals
1992 – lost to Duke in the finals
  • earned No. 4 seed in NCAA tournament, lost in Southwest region semifinals
1996 – lost to Clemson in the quarterfinals
  • earned No. 6 seed in NCAA tournament, lost in second round
1997 – beat NC State in the finals
  • earned No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament, lost in the Final Four
1999 – lost to Duke in the finals
  • earned No. 3 seed in NCAA tournament, lose in first round
