Joe Schmidt is the latest former walk-on to earn a scholarship after stellar play at Notre Dame, as the rising junior was given one by the staff two weeks ago, the school confirmed.
Schmidt, an inside linebacker, follows in the footsteps of former safety and special-teams ace Chris Salvi, who was captured by the UND cameras when hearing the memorable announcement from coach Brian Kelly in March of 2012.
Schmidt played in 10 games for the Irish last season and was a staple on special teams, making six tackles.
The Orange, Calif., native turned down scholarship offers from Air Force and Cincinnati when coming out of high school, according to BlueandGold.com.
If social media is any indication, Schmidt was a happy man upon receiving the news from the staff.
I am so blessed. Thank you God thank you God thank you God.
