2013 Top 25 Player Countdown: No. 21

July, 29, 2013
No. 21 on our list is hoping that something like that Alabama game never happens again.

No. 21: Elijah Shumate, S

Previous ranking: Not ranked

Making the case: Shumate was one of eight true freshman to see the field last season, rising to nickelback on a thin secondary that ended up exceeding expectations. This spring he took reps with the first-team at safety, next to redshirt sophomore Matthias Farley. The 6-foot, 213-pound sophomore has taken on new responsibilities, making calls and pre-snap adjustments, as he looks to continue a run of success that saw him win 55 straight games on the prep and college levels before the BCS title game loss to Alabama. There was a reason, after all, that Shumate was a four-star prospect coming out of powerhouse Don Bosco Prep (N.J.).
