SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame linebacker Danny Spond's football career is over.

Spond, a starter for the Fighting Irish at outside linebacker linebacker last season, announced the news to the team Saturday, coach Brian Kelly said. Kelly said Spond had a medical issue and that his family would announce further specifics later.

"It was an emotional decision," Kelly said of Spond. "It didn't come without a lot of thought. He spent the day speaking to a lot of specialists and his family was here, so this was not a decision that came easy."
