Dismissing Boyd was the right call

Given the damning and graphic evidence that the deputy district attorney read in court last Friday, Vanderbilt had no choice.

Junior receiver Chris Boyd was dismissed from the team Tuesday after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of trying to help in a cover-up of an alleged rape on campus in June that led to the earlier dismissal of four other Vanderbilt football players.

Boyd had been suspended from the team for the first three games, and there was a feeling in and around the program that he might be allowed to return at some point.

But in hearing the deputy district attorney describe in great detail the depth to which Boyd was involved in the cover-up, there was no way he was going to be back.

Beth Fortune, Vanderbilt's vice chancellor for public affairs, said in a statement: "Vanderbilt’s athletic administration, in conjunction with its head football coach, today dismissed Chris Boyd from the university’s football team and athletic program. The action came after an ongoing review that included information disclosed during a hearing Sept. 13 in Davidson County Criminal Court. The review concluded that Mr. Boyd’s admitted actions are clearly inconsistent with the high standards of behavior expected of our student-athletes.”

As part of his plea deal, Boyd will have to testify against his former teammates who allegedly took part in the rape of the unconscious 21-year-old female in a Vanderbilt dorm room.

The whole thing is a stain that's not going to go away any time soon for Vanderbilt's football program.
