Beckett throws briefly Friday

PHILADELPHIA -- Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett was able to play catch Friday with pitching coach John Farrell as trainer Mike Reinold looked on.

Beckett was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier this week with a lower-back strain. He is scheduled to come off the DL on June 3, but the Red Sox say don't want to rush him and will do what is in his best interests.

While his session with Farrell was brief, it was a positive step.
