BALTIMORE -- Ailing Red Sox outfielder Mike Cameron was scheduled to take batting practice Friday and is feeling significantly better.

He's missed the majority of the season with a left abdominal tear and recently felt discomfort on the other side as well. He underwent an MRI and was examined by a specialist on Wednesday and it was determined Cameron did not have to return to the disabled list.

"He's doing better," manager Terry Francona said before Friday's game against the Orioles. "To what extent I don't know yet. He seemed real upbeat today. He'll go through BP and we'll see how he reacts. I would say significant improvement."

Depending on how Cameron gets through BP and how he feels afterward, Francona said there's a possibility he could be used as a emergency pinch-hitter if needed Friday.

"We'll see. That would be great," Francona said. "I don't know if we're there yet, but that would be really good. It might be a rush, but we'll see. If you see that happening, he would obviously have to feel real good."
