Pedroia won't need surgery

BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is not expected to need surgery to insert a pin in the fractured bone in his left foot, the team said Monday night.

Red Sox medical director Thomas Gill examined Pedroia on Monday in Boston and confirmed the fracture of the medial navicular bone in his left foot. He is expected to miss six weeks.

Meanwhile, no decision has yet been made on whether catcher Victor Martinez will need to be placed on the 15-day disabled list, while pitcher Clay Buchholz is not expected to go on the DL, according to the team. Martinez's agent, Alan Nero, also wrote in an e-mail that a decision was still pending.

The Boston Globe, citing sources, reported that Martinez will indeed go on the DL on Tuesday. Responding to that report, Nero wrote in an e-mail: "To the best of my knowledge the decision has not been made yet.''

The Red Sox kept catcher Gustavo Molina out of Pawtucket's starting lineup Monday night in Syracuse, just in case he was needed in Boston the next day.

The Red Sox medical staff described Martinez's injury as a "minimally displaced fracture on the tip of his left thumb" that is not expected to require surgery. It's unclear how long he might be sidelined.

Buchholz, meanwhile, who left Saturday's game with what was described at the time as a hyperextended left knee, was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain after having an MRI on Monday. But with the Red Sox having two off-days this week, there are no plans to place him on the DL, the team said.

All three players were injured last weekend in San Francisco. Pedroia fouled a ball off his foot Friday night, Buchholz strained his hamstring while running the bases Saturday, and Martinez's thumb was struck by foul tips in successive innings on Sunday.

In another roster move, the Red Sox activated second baseman/outfielder Eric Patterson, newly acquired from Oakland, and designated reliever Fabio Castro for assignment. Also, righty Boof Bonser cleared waivers and has chosen to become a free agent.
