ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- As expected, Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz was placed on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, knocking him out of the All-Star Game on July 13 in Anaheim, Calif., and bringing the total of disabled Boston players from the major league roster to nine.
The Sox recalled left-hander Felix Doubront to start Tuesday against the Rays, the team announced before Monday's game.
"We just weren't comfortable about the running part," manager Terry Francona said of Buchholz. "There's no reason for us to rush it."
The 22-year-old Venezuelan made one earlier start for the Red Sox, on June 18 against the Dodgers in Fenway Park, going five innings (plus four batters in the sixth) and allowing five runs (three earned) in a 10-6 Sox victory. Doubront was credited with the win. He is 3-2 with a 2.36 ERA in six starts for Pawtucket; in each of his two starts since returning to the PawSox, Doubront has gone five innings and allowed two runs.
"I feel more confident, more relaxed this time," Doubront said.
Although he won't be able to pitch in the All-Star Game, Buchholz, who was named an All-Star for the first time, has said he plans to attend. He has an offseason home in California. Buchholz was replaced on the AL roster by Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte.
Buchholz, who is 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA in 15 starts this season, strained his left hamstring June 26 in San Francisco. He will be eligible to come off the DL to pitch in Boston's first series after the All-Star break, at home against Texas.
The other members of the depleted Red Sox already on the disabled list are Dustin Pedroia (foot), Victor Martinez (thumb), Manny Delcarmen (forearm), Jason Varitek (foot), Josh Beckett (back), Jacoby Ellsbury (ribs), Jeremy Hermida (ribs) and Mike Lowell (hip).
Beckett, on the disabled list since May 19 with a lower back strain, is scheduled to pitch in a rookie-level Gulf Coast League game Tuesday with a limit of about 55 pitches.
If recent rainy weather in Florida continues and the GCL game is postponed, Beckett would instead throw a simulated game at Tropicana Field against Red Sox minor leaguers.
