ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox have received Major League Baseball's first commissioner's award for philanthropic excellence.
The award was presented Wednesday by Bud Selig to Red Sox chairman Tom Werner. Selig praised the impact of the Red Sox Scholars program. MLB will give a $10,000 grant to the Red Sox Foundation, which selects 25 economically disadvantaged fifth graders from public school each year. They receive tutoring, mentoring, after-school enrichment and summer camp assistance through the 12th grade, culminating with a $10,000 college scholarship.
