Boston College safety Wes Davis has decided to end his football career after suffering his second serious neck injury as a member of the Eagles.

Davis, who was hospitalized as a precaution after he suffered a neck injury Oct. 23 against Maryland, consulted with his doctors and his family and concluded it was in his best interest to move on, according to BC associate athletic director of media relations, Chris Cameron.

Though an MRI and a CT scan showed no fracture in his neck after he was injured against the Terrapins, Davis missed the Eagles' game against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday.

On Sunday, Davis announced his decision.

A fifth-year senior and defensive co-captain, Davis missed most of the 2007 season after suffering a neck injury that required surgery.

Davis had been third on the team with 36 tackles, including 26 solo tackles, and had one interception.

Also on Sunday, Eagles head coach Frank Spaziani announced that senior cornerback DeLeon Gause will undergo surgery on his injured right knee on Wednesday. He's expected to miss at least three weeks, and Spaziani said he might be able to return 10 days or so after that period.

Spaziani also said right tackle Rich Lapham, who left Saturday's game against Clemson with a knee injury, was scheduled to have an MRI on Sunday.
