For the Boston University men's hockey team to successfully defend its national championship, things are going to have to go better than they did Friday night in its season opener at Amherst, Mass.

The University of Massachusetts snapped a 2-2 tie on Will Ortiz's goal early in the third period and held on to beat the second-ranked Terriers, 3-2, at the Mullins Center.

BU did not go easily, but UMass goalie Paul Dainton was up to the task, making 16 saves in the third period and 39 for the game.

BU outshot UMass, 41-26, and 16-4 in the final period

While the Terriers' hockey pedigree is considerably more impressive than the Minutemen's, UMass is 4-4-2 in its last 10 meetings with BU.

The Minutemen, who opened the season with a win over RPI, got the jump on the champs, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period. Rocco Carzo opened the scoring at 5:21 with assists from Ortiz and Doug Kublin, and Matt Irwin scored for UMass at 8:58.

A power-play goal by BU freshman Alex Chiasson at 13:17 made it 2-1 after one.

Chiasson struck again at 6:32 of the second to tie the game, 2-2.

Ortiz's winner came on an odd-man rush at 1:57 of the third. Danny Hobbs and Carzo assisted.

UMass beat Boston College in their first meeting last year.
