BOSTON -- Longtime Boston Herald sports columnist and boxing writer George Kimball has died of esophageal cancer at age 67.

Kimball's wife, Marge Marash, tells the Associated Press that Kimball died at his home in New York City on Wednesday night. Kimball worked for the newspaper from 1980 to 2005, and wrote and edited several books about boxing, including "Four Kings."

Kimball was diagnosed with cancer shortly after he retired. In an appreciation written for the Herald on Thursday, former colleague Michael Gee noted that in the years after the diagnosis, Kimball had five books published as an author or editor.

Gee wrote that Kimball didn't fight cancer, "he did something better. He ignored it."

No funeral was planned. Kimball's wife says a memorial will be held at a later date.
