ESPN has invited GIs stationed abroad to become pen pals with some of America's greatest pro athletes. Meanwhile, a number of the top names in sports have volunteered to trade e-mails with the GIs on a regular basis over the course of several weeks.

We hope this correspondence will boost morale and give the participants -- and our readers (in the U.S. and in military units overseas) -- a better sense of the real-life experiences, hopes and concerns of both the GIs and the athletes.
