Kafka falls short in Herculean task

Quarterback will wonder what could have been

TAMPA, Fla. -- He kept throwing and throwing, in the rain and wind, the haze and muck. He threw when the game was just beginning, when it was "over" in the first half, when it hung in the balance in the fourth quarter, and when it was "over" yet again.

He threw so much that he broke Outback Bowl records for attempts, completions, plays, total yards, passing yards, and yes, interceptions. Northwestern senior quarterback Mike Kafka went 47-for-78 on New Year's Day for 532 yards -- ...
