PITTSBURGH -- The Chicago Cubs have recalled right-hander Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa.

Better known as a former standout wide receiver at Notre Dame, Samardzija went 1-2 with a 7.81 ERA in two previous stints in the majors this season. He was also on the roster from April 23-May 6 and June 30-Aug. 13, making 16 appearances out of the bullpen and one start.

In his most recent major league outing, Samardzija allowed seven runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings. He started Monday in Iowa's season finale, going 4 1-3 innings.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Samardzija would not be available to pitch for Chicago until the weekend.

Samardzija was an All-America selection in 2006 for the Fighting Irish. He holds the school record for receptions with 179.
