Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija, a former wide receiver at Notre Dame, was sorry to see his former coach lose his job.

"I'm a big Charlie Weis guy," said Samardzija, who was in Chicago as part of the Cubs Caravan at Harry Caray's restaurant. "He did so much for me when I was there. It's unfortunate. Obviously, you'd like to see him do better. You can't go 6-6 and lose the games they lost in the last couple of years.

"It's unfortunate, I really like him, but hopefully [new coach Brian] Kelly comes in and brings some good talent in with him, even though there's some already there, and they win a bunch of games and we can start talking about how much USC sucks now because they don't have a good coach."

Samardzija, drafted by the Cubs in the fifth round in 2006, finished his career as Notre Dame's all-time leader in receiving yards (2,593).
