The Chicago Cubs on Saturday activated rookie relief pitcher Esmailin Caridad, who has been rehabbing a strained right forearm.

Caridad entered the game in the seventh inning, and faced two Cincinnati Reds batters. Both hit ground balls that resulted in errors on the Cubs Starlin Castro and Mike Fontenot.

Caridad had been on the disabled list since April 12.

The Cubs optioned Jeff Gray to Triple-A Iowa to open a roster spot. Gray was called up when Caridad went on the disabled list and was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA.

The Cubs also sent struggling left-handed reliever John Grabow to Chicago for a precautionary MRI exam on his left knee. No problem was found.

Manager Lou Piniella said Grabow has complained of trouble pushing push off the rubber because of the sore knee and will get a couple days of rest. Grabow is 0-2 with a 9.26 ERA.
